Corneal tattooing which is popularly known as eyeball tattoo has been around for almost 2000 years. It is the practice of tattooing the cornea of the human eye and people who practice it do it for reasons such as improving the cosmetic appearance of their eyes and improving their eyesight. Though various methods and procedures for doing it exist today, concerns have been raised about the safety and success of the procedure.
Reconstructive purposes - certain people with scarring on their cornea as a result of eye defects like leucoma , keratits and cataracts are among the majority of people who opt for the procedure, as it helps to cosmetically alter discoloration on the cornea by blending it into normal eye color.
Most physicians however believe that the procedure would be best for patients who have already lost their vision or do not expect visual recovery. Occasionally, corneal tattooing can be done in cases where it might improve eye sight.
If you plan on getting your eyes tattooed, be aware that the procedure has evolved over the years and with the advent of technology, the process is extremely successful. It involves the injection of indian pink into the amniotic membrane space . According to J.N Roy, a professor at the university of Montreal, "placing a bandage over the eye is not indicated; treatment after the procedure itself is limited."
